Open Gardens Update

Thank you very much" to everybody who either helped at, or supported the open gardens by coming. A "thank you" to Mirren Boyle for all her organising time & skills, and to each of the 8 brave families who opened their gardens.

All the gardens and the phone box were spectacular on the day and very much appreciated by the many visitors. Thank you also to the Wivey town band who entertained us so well, whilst we all enjoyed the wonderful teas and glorious weather.

The total raised was over £1300.00 for the church restoration, so again thank you very much everybody for a great village effort!

Rev Margaret

Village Hall Whist

Whist takes place at 7.30 pm on the fourth Monday in the month and is very popular. The hall is packed and there is always a good array of prizes to be won.

The event is run by Hazel Scott and raises funds for the Village Hall.  (From: Website)

St Mary’s Church

Restoration Project

The scaffolding which was put up a month ago was quite a tricky job - because of the shape of the roof, particularly the width of the roof of the north aisle.   Now that most of the old tiles have been removed, the roof timbers and inner lining would otherwise have been open to the elements, but the high-level temporary roof of metal sheeting gives the protection required.

Improvement to the ground drainage system has been completed, so the base around the building should now be proof against the very heaviest of rain.  Also some repointing has been carried out.  The new Cornish slates have arrived, and will be going up during the next few weeks.  The last time St Mary’s was re-roofed was in 1881, so the present major job is timely, and the new roof should last for at least another hundred years.

The target for completion of the building work remains the end of October, and most of our regular services will be held at Tolland until then.  Please see the table below for exceptions, and later on watch out for notices giving information about reopening.

12th, 13th, 14th December Christmas Revue Village Hall

Brompton Ralph Revue

The tenth Revue will take place this December. I am hoping that the customary stalwart cast and crew be willing to participate and make this a special occasion. It would be great if any new talent (I use the word tentatively, because, as you may have observed, it's not absolutely necessary) were to show itself and boost our possibilities. Dates of performance are the 12th, 13th and 14th December, with Dress rehearsals on the 9th and 10th. We are repeating the usual pattern of rehearsing on Saturday mornings at 10:00, and a weekday evening, which this year is Thursday at 7:30pm, and we have already started.

If this is the year when you will first tread the boards, or help in any other respect, please make yourself known to me on 01984 623454. You will be welcomed ecstatically.

Thank you

(Verity Martindill)

John Scott’s Friendly Cricket Match and Social
